Vegan Thai in Brisbane
I've cooked Thai food for over 30 years, and the secret nobody tells you is that the garden does the heavy lifting. Fragrant herbs. Charred greens. Silken tofu, salt and pepper, straight from the wok.
Our vegan and vegetarian menu isn't a side thought. It's a menu of its own, thirteen dishes, and it changes with the seasons because that's how I shop.
Grown in the Valley. Cooked in the Valley.
Our mushrooms come from Urban Valley, an urban farm on Esther Street, five minutes from our door. Picked in the morning, over the coals that night. That's the Valley feeding the Valley, and you can taste it.
The vege and vegan menu
Our menu changes with the seasons and with what's available. This is indicative of the daily selection. Snacks are one each. Larger dishes are sized to share, and some are available as a single serve.

Common questions
Is Short Grain a vegan restaurant?
No. Short Grain is a Thai restaurant with a dedicated vegan and vegetarian menu. If you're dining with people who eat meat, everyone orders from their own menu and the table still shares. If you'd rather eat somewhere entirely plant-based, we'd rather tell you that up front.
Do I need to tell you in advance?
No. The vege and vegan menu is available at every service, lunch and dinner. The $55 vegan set menu runs Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday dinner and Friday and Sunday lunch. If you have allergies on top of that, add them to the notes when you book so the kitchen knows before you sit down.
Is the vegan food gluten free too?
Most of it. Everything marked gf is gluten free, which covers almost the whole vege and vegan menu. The kitchen has a dedicated fryer.
Can you make dishes from the main menu plant-based?
Most mains, yes. Anything marked vgo already has a vegan version. Beyond that, ask on the night. But the vege and vegan menu isn't a reduced version of the main one, it's its own menu, and most people find what they want on it.
